KINGSTON, Ont. – A wild game had an all too familiar result for the UOIT men's soccer team as they walked away with a 5-5 draw against the Queen's Gaels in Kingston.
For the third straight match, the Ridgebacks allowed a goal in extra time that ended up resulting in a tie. On Friday night, it was not just one goal by the opposition but two, as the Gaels erased a 5-3 deficit to escape with the draw.
Christopher Jaggarnath (Scarborough, Ont.) and
Erik Petrovic (Sombor, Serbia) scored first half markers for UOIT as the teams entered halftime knotted at 2-2.
After Andrew Martin put the Gaels up 3-2 in the 52nd minute, the Ridgebacks offence exploded for three straight goals over an 18-minute span.
Fabio Campoli (Frosinone, Italy) tied the game at 3-3 and
Brendan Costello (Oshawa, Ont.) got the go-ahead goal in the 76th minute. Four minutes later, it looked as if
Noah Antenucci (Brampton, Ont.) put the game rest as he scored his first goal of the year giving UOIT a 5-3 advantage.
Jacob Schroeter and Sam Abernethy of Queen's spoiled the Ridgebacks party, beating UOIT goalkeeper
Nicholas Miller (Oshawa, Ont.) twice in extra time to earn the draw.
Queen's fired 28 shots with 13 ending up on target while UOIT had 11 in the game.
With their third straight tie, UOIT (3-7-4) remains in the sixth and final playoff spot in the OUA eastern conference, one point ahead of the Trent Excalibur (3-8-3). The two teams will clash in their season finale on Saturday, Oct. 22 in Peterborough.
The Ridgebacks will take on RMC this Sunday in Kingston at 2:15 p.m. With a Ridgeback win and Trent loss to Queen's, UOIT would clinch a playoff spot.
