OSHAWA, Ont. – The old adage is that two-goals is the most dangerous lead in hockey. For UOIT on Sunday, it turned out that a three-goal lead was most dangerous as the Queen's Gaels scored four unanswered goals to win 4-3 in double overtime.
Three minutes into the second period, UOIT led 3-0 with goals by
Jenna Carter (Whitby, Ont.),
Victoria MacKenzie (Toronto, Ont.) and
Shalyn Pavlisko (Oshawa, Ont.).
By the end of the second period, Queen's would cut the lead to just one behind back-to-back goals by Katrina Manoukarakis.
The Ridgebacks would hang on to their 3-2 lead for the majority of the third period until Kyla Crouse tied the game with 2:57 left on the clock as she buried a one-time from the slot.
The Ridgebacks penalty killing unit stepped up fighting off a double-minor by Carter in overtime, as five minutes of 4-on-4 did not break the deadlock. About a minute into double-overtime, Manoukarakis beat UOIT goaltender
Cassie Charette (Ottawa, Ont.) on a wrap-around to complete the hat-trick and give the Gaels a comeback victory.
The Ridgebacks have dropped five straight games but end their four-game pointless streak with the overtime loss.
UOIT will look to rebound next weekend with road games against Nipissing and Laurentian.
