OSHAWA, Ont. – For the second straight game, the No. 5 ranked UQTR Patriotes beat UOIT behind a strong third period.
With three unanswered goals in the final 20 minutes at the Campus Ice Centre on Friday, UQTR defeated UOIT 6-2 to improve to 17-3-1.
After
Connor Jarvis (Port Union, Ont.) cut the UQTR lead to 3-2 midway through the second period, it looked as if the Ridgebacks had seized the momentum in the game. With UOIT's offence generating several scoring opportunities to close out the period, freshman goaltender Sebastien Auger came up with a number of key saves to maintain the Patriotes lead.
The league's top offence was led by Carl-Antoine Delisle who recorded a hat-trick scoring a goal in every period. Mathieu Lemay also had a three-point night with a trio of assists while Anthony Verret had two goals.
One bright spot for the Ridgeback defence was that they put an end to Guillaume Asselin's 14-game point streak. Asselin leads the OUA with 17 goals this season.
James Woodcroft (Minton, Ont.) was the other goal scorer for UOIT while
Alex Derlis (Campbellford, Ont.)
Nate Mitton (Kitchener, Ont.) and
Cameron Yuill (Wellington, Ont.) all recorded assists.
Auger made 28 saves in his league leading 17
th victory of the season. UOIT goaltender
Brendan O'Neill (Ilderton, Ont.) allowed five goals on 34 shots before being pulled for
Ben Csiernik (Hamilton, Ont.) who stopped seven of eight shots on goal.
With Queen's (11-5-0) losing 4-3 to Concordia (8-9-3) on Friday, UOIT (11-7-1) remains one point ahead of the Gaels for fourth place in the OUA eastern conference standings.
