GUELPH, Ont. – UOIT is now playing the waiting game.
The men's curling team have finished round-robin play at the OUA championship in Guelph with a 5-1 record, but when they play next is still up in the air. The result of Sunday morning's game between the Western Mustangs and Toronto Varsity Blues will determine if it's a quarter-final or semifinal that the Ridgebacks play next.
Going into Saturday play the Ridgebacks were 4-0, but up against a 3-1 Western Mustangs squad were unable to keep the win streak alive.
The Mustangs were the first team on the board with a single in the second end. UOIT answered with two in the third, but a big three in the fourth for Western put them ahead 4-2 at the break.
Another blank in the fifth allowed the Ridgebacks to maintain control of hammer, but in the sixth they were only able to score one. Stealing was the name of the game in seven as they took one to tie the game 4-4.
Western ended up blanking the eighth to force an extra end. In nine they scored one to improve to 4-1 at the championship and give the Ridgebacks their first loss.
UOIT would bounce back in their next game against Queen's, but it took another extra end to get the 7-6 victory.
After one for the Ridgebacks in the first and a blank in the second, the Gaels took two in the third. UOIT went ahead 3-2 at the break with a deuce in the fourth.
Back-to-back singles by Queen's changed possession of the lead going into the seventh. A three by the Ridgebacks in the seventh put UOIT back ahead 6-4, but again the Gaels answered by scoring two, which forced a ninth end.
UOIT scored one to win 7-6 and finish the round-robin 5-1.
