Ridgeback curlers perfect after day one

GUELPH, Ont. - Scoring was not an issue for the UOIT men's curling team on day one of the OUA championship as they put up 14 points in a pair of victories.

The Ridgebacks end day one sitting in first place in pool B with a 2-0 record, tied with the Western Mustangs and Toronto Varsity Blues.

Playing the Algoma Thunderbirds in their first match of the championship, UOIT made a statement early on scoring three points in the opening end.

After holding Algoma to one point with the hammer in the third, UOIT would go on to score four more points in the fourth to take a commanding 7-1 lead.

UOIT managed to steal a point in the fifth end which was enough to force handshakes as Algoma conceded the victory.

In the final draw of the day against the Guelph Gryphons, UOIT would take advantage when holding the hammer as they scored a pair of points in the first, third and fifth ends.

Trailing 6-3 after five, Guelph was able to claw their way back in the match with back-to-back points. In the eighth and final end, UOIT was able to run the Gryphons out of rocks and pick up a single point to hold on for the 7-5 victory.

The Ridgebacks will play Carleton (0-2) and Toronto (2-0) on day two of the championship that is being held in Guelph.
