Game Recap: Men's Hockey | | UOIT Sports Information

UOIT’s season comes to an end in Ottawa

OTTAWA - The UOIT men's hockey team had their season come to an end on Friday night as they dropped a 6-1 decision to the No. 9 ranked Carleton Ravens in game two of their OUA quarter-final series. With the win, Carleton sweeps the Ridgebacks to advance to the second round of the OUA playoffs.

This marks the third straight year UOIT has been swept in their opening round series of the OUA playoffs. In five playoff appearances, UOIT has never advanced out of the first round.

Penalties would plague UOIT early in game two, as they took back-to-back infractions just five minutes in. Carleton would take full advantage of their opportunities as Mitch Zion scored on the power play, giving his team the early lead and three points in the series.

Carleton would continue to pile on the goals in the opening frame as Chet Binning and Corey Durocher scored less than a minute apart, giving the Ravens a 3-0 lead. Durocher's strike came down a man, which marked the Ravens' second shorthanded goal of the playoffs.

The Ravens picked up where they left off to open up the second period as Matthew Stanisz beat UOIT goaltender Brendan O'Neill (Ilderton, Ont.) less than a minute in. The Ravens' fourth goal ended O'Neill's night, as he stopped 15 of 19 shots. Second year netminder Colin Dzijacky (Thunder Bay, Ont.) would replace O'Neill and allow a single goal over the remainder of the period, which gave the Ravens a stranglehold on the game.

Despite trailing by five, UOIT would not back down and manage to break up Francis Dupuis' shutout in the third period, with Jesse Stoughton (Bobcaygeon, Ont.) recording his first goal of the playoffs. Mitch Bennett (Fenelon Falls, Ont.) and Brendan Wise (Stouffville, Ont.) had assists on the play.

Stoughton's goal was too little, too late as Carleton would find the back of the net one more time to skate away with the lopsided victory and series sweep. Stanisz ended up leading all scorers with one goal and two assists.

Shots would end up 31-26 in favour of the Ravens, which included Carleton outshooting the Ridgebacks 18-9 in the opening 20 minutes. UOIT was 1-for-6 with the man advantage, with five of their opportunities coming in the third period.

Head coach Craig Fisher led the team to a 13-18-2 overall record in his first year behind the bench. Thirteen victories is the second highest total in program history, only trailing the 2010-11 team that went 16-16-5.
