OSHAWA, Ont. – The Queen's Gaels erased a two-goal third period deficit and scored the overtime winner to put an end to the Ridgebacks' three-game win streak at the Campus Ice Centre Saturday night.
The Ridgebacks came two feet short of clinching their fourth straight win when they sent the puck towards the empty net but it stopped just before the goal line. Queen's would rush back down the ice and score the game-tying goal with nine seconds left on the clock, as Spencer Abraham would slap a one-timer by
Brendan O'Neill.
Queen's would complete the comeback 53 seconds into overtime with Darcy Greenaway scoring from the slot, beating a screened O'Neill.
With the overtime loss, UOIT earned three of a possible four points against the Gaels this weekend. The Ridgebacks won the first half of the home-and-home series 5-3 in Kingston on Friday.
Despite their win-streak coming to an end, the Ridgebacks' point streak continued as they have earned points in four straight games.
Loren Ulett (Port Perry, Ont.) and
Connor Jarvis (Port Union, Ont.) were the goal scorers for UOIT, as they each picked up their third goal of the weekend. Ulett had two goals in Saturday's loss with each one coming in the second period.
Greenaway finished the night with two goals in the win, with Abraham and Jordan Coccimiglio rounding out scoring for Queen's.
The game was evenly matched with shots finishing 29-27 in favour of Queen's, with the edge coming in overtime with the Gaels recording the two lone shots.
Jacob Brennan, who did not play in Friday's game, made 24 stops for his second win in as many starts. O'Neill suffered the loss in his ninth straight start.
For the first time in his OUA career,
Ben Blasko (Kingston, Ont.) was held pointless. His point-streak ends after recording two goals and eight assists in his first eight games.
Queen's was 1-for-4 on the power play while UOIT went 0-for-2. The Gaels' game-tying goal came with defender
Jason Shaw (Belleville, Ont.) in the box, with the energetic crowd in attendance questioning the late call.
The Gaels (6-2-0) move one point ahead of UOIT (5-3-1) for third place in the OUA eastern conference standings. The Ridgebacks are tied with Nipissing (4-3-3) but have a game in hand.
UOIT will be back home next weekend as they host the Waterloo Warriors (Friday) and Laurier Golden Hawks (Saturday). Puck drop at the Campus Ice Centre for both games is 7:30 p.m.
