No. 2 McGill ends UOIT’s point streak

MONTREAL – UOIT's eight-game point streak came to an end on Friday night as the No. 2 ranked McGill Redmen earned a 7-3 victory in Montreal.

The Redmen would take advantage of 12 power play opportunities, scoring six goals with the man advantage including three times in the third period to clinch their league leading 13th victory.

In total, the Ridgebacks would be assessed 69 minutes of penalties on 17 infractions including veteran defender Jason Shaw (Belleville, Ont.) being issued a game-misconduct for high sticking in the first period.

The Redmen scored two goals off of Shaw's penalty taking a 3-0 lead into the locker room after 20 minutes. Shots after the first period were 26-4 in favour of McGill.

UOIT would show a lot of fight clawing their way back in the game to only trail 4-3 after forty minutes. Ryan Doucette (Waterloo, Ont.), Mark Petaccio (Sicklerville, N.J.) and James Woodcroft (Milton, Ont.) were the goal scorers for UOIT in the second.

Shots flipped in favour of UOIT as they held a 14-5 advantage in the period.

Early the third period, McGill would regain control of the game scoring on a two-man advantage coming after a pair of UOIT stick infractions called at the end of the second period. This was McGill's second goal scored playing 5-on-3. The Redmen added two more power play markers to close out the victory.

Freshman Daniel Milne had a career night for McGill scoring two goals and three assists. Defender Samuel Labrecque also had two goals for the Redmen.

Petaccio was the lone Ridgeback in double digits in scoring as he had a goal and an assist to give him 13 points on the year.

Brendan O'Neill (Ilderton, Ont.) was busy in net facing 43 Redmen shots, matching the most he has seen this season. Jacob Gervais-Chouinard made 18 saves in his 11th straight start for McGill.

The Redmen sit atop of the eastern conference standings with a record of 13-2-0. UOIT (9-4-1) remains in third place after the fourth place Carleton Ravens (9-4-0) suffered a 2-0 shutout loss to Guelph (8-6-0).

The Ridgebacks will close out the 2015 portion of their schedule at home next weekend beginning with a Thursday night game against the Toronto Varsity Blues (5-7-2). Puck drop at the Campus Ice Centre is 7:30 p.m.
