OSHAWA, Ont. – What doesn't kill you makes you stronger. That's the words that the UOIT men's soccer team will be living by as they head into the home stretch of their regular season after falling 1-0 to Toronto after a Varsity Blues injury time goal.
The teams went scoreless for over 94 minutes but Toronto managed to break the deadlock on their final offensive possession. Jason Cordeiro streaked through the Ridgebacks defence and chipped the ball by UOIT goalkeeper
Travis Martin (Whitby, Ont.) for the game's lone goal. Immediately after the celebration, the referee blew his whistle to signal fulltime.
UOIT's best scoring chance came in the 61st minute when
Fabio Campoli's (Woodbridge, Ont.) long-range free kick rang off the crossbar.
Martin would finish the night making seven saves while Rab Bruce-Lockhart stopped all five Ridgeback shots on net.
Toronto (8-2-1) moves just one point back of the Ryerson Rams (8-1-2) for first place in the OUA eastern conference standings. UOIT (4-5-1) slips back into sixth place, one point behind the Nipissing Lakers (3-2-5).
It will be a pivotal weekend for UOIT on the road as the Ridgebacks take on Nipissing (Oct. 10) and Laurentian (Oct. 11). The Voyageurs trail UOIT by just three points for the final playoff spot in the conference.
