KINGSTON, Ont. – The UOIT men's soccer team had their season come to a close Wednesday night in their OUA eastern conference quarter-final in Kingston.
The host Queen's Gaels (9-2-5) finished third in the conference, earning the right to host the game and the sixth place Ridgebacks (5-9-2). With a pair of goals in the first 20 minutes of the match it would be the Gaels that eventually advanced to the next round of the postseason with a 2-1 victory.
Chris Wellsman opened the scoring with his goal in the 10
th minute of play, with teammate Sam Abernathy pushing the Gaels lead to two in the 15
th minute.
UOIT's
Erik Petrovic (Sombor, Serbia) cut the lead to one with his goal in the 26
th minute, but the Ridgebacks were unable to find the back of the goal a second time as keeper
Travis Martin (Whitby, Ont.) took the loss for UOIT after making three saves in the match.
Queen's keeper Taylor Reynolds made five saves in their victory.
This was the second straight season the Ridgebacks qualified for the OUA postseason, with 2014 being the first time UOIT appeared in and won a playoff match.
Graduating senior, Martin, had five shutouts this season for UOIT, while Petrovic led the team with six goals in 15 matches.
Also graduating from programs at UOIT were
Idrees Sharrieff (Bermuda) and
Alexander Cuccovillo (Ajax, Ont.).
