OSHAWA, Ont. - Day one of the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) women's field lacrosse championship is in the books as Brock, Western, Laurier and Queen's all won their respective quarter-final matches to punch their ticket to the semifinals.
Western, the four-time defending champions, were put to the test in the early stages of their match against the Trent Excalibur as the game was tied 2-2 midway through the first half. However, the Mustangs would go on a 7-0 run to pull ahead for good, winning by a score of 15-6.
Megan Wilkins was named the player of the game for Western scoring four goals while teammate Lauren Stewart had a hat-trick. Leah Ogilvie led the Excalibur with two goals, giving her five on the day as she scored three in their 11-6 win over Guelph to open up the championship.
Brock, who was the first team to beat Western in four years during the regular season, would end up picking up a convincing 11-6 win over the hosting Ridgebacks. The loss ended UOIT's medal hopes, as they are still looking for their first podium finish in program history. Brock looked impressive early on outscoring UOIT 6-1 at the half. Trailing 11-2, the Ridgebacks scored four goals in the final seven minutes of the game to make the score respectable.
Sarah Simpson had a hat-trick for the Badgers while
Taylor Milburn scored four goals for the Ridgebacks. Brock did an excellent job defensively holding 2014 offensive MVP
Taylor Landry to just one goal.
In the closest game of the day, Laurier would end up edging out the Toronto Varsity Blues 8-7 to advance to the semifinals. Taylor Miller of Laurier scored the game-winning goal with seven minutes left on the clock. Torey Barfoot was named the player of the game for Laurier scoring three goals. Sarah Jamieson, Christine Neatby and Melissa Holland paced the Varsity Blues offence with two goals apiece.
In the final game of the day, the first place Queen's Gaels cruised to a 16-5 win over McMaster. Queen's had a well-balanced offensive attack scoring eight goals in each half. McMaster had several attempts on net, but goaltender Carly Rodgers stood tall as she was named the Gaels player of the game.
Action resumes at 9 a.m. at the Civic Fields in Oshawa. The semifinals will begin at 2:15 p.m.
