OSHAWA, Ont. - Sonja Weidenfelder of the Toronto women's hockey team scored midway through the third period that turned out to be the game winner as the Varsity Blues skated to a 1-0 victory over UOIT.
Teams go through an entire season without seeing a penalty shot, but Friday's contest featured three of them. Ridgeback goaltender
Cassie Charette (Ottawa) would stop both Toronto attempts in the second period, while
Nicole LoPresti's (Hamilton, Ont.) attempt was turned aside in the third period.
The game was scoreless after 40 minutes, but Toronto would break the ice after back-to-back body checking penalties were called against assistant captain
Victoria MacKenzie (Toronto). On the second power play, Weidenfelder would cut into the slot untouched and fire a wrist shot in the top corner for the game winner.
Despite the loss, Charette was phenomenal in net stopping 36 shots. Toronto fired a lot of pucks on net in the final frame, outshooting UOIT 20-5. Fifth year goaltender Nicole Kesteris would stop 18 shots to go on and record her third shutout of the season.
The loss extends the Ridgebacks pointless streak to eight games. Capitalizing on offensive opportunities has been an issue over the losing skid as they have only scored six goals.
UOIT falls to 5-10-1 on the year and remains four points out of a playoff position. Toronto has won three straight games and is 9-3-2 on the year.
The Ridgebacks will look to put an end to the streak on home ice next Sunday as they welcome the York Lions to Oshawa. Game time at the Campus Ice Centre is 3:30 p.m.
