Ridgebacks looking for overall improvement as regular season draws to a close

OUA Women's Hockey
Queen's defeats UOIT 5-2

OSHAWA, Ont. – UOIT women's hockey head coach Karen Nystrom said her team needs to be better overall as they head into their final four games of the regular season.

The team lost 5-2 to Queen's on Thursday night at the Campus Ice Centre and following the game said there is no one person or group of players that needs to get better, the team needs to improve from the net out.

Queen's was 3-for-10 on the power play on the night, with five of their man advantages coming in the opening period. UOIT ended the night 2-for-4 on the power play.

Opening the scoring for the Gaels 8:27 into the game was Chelsey Verbeek with her first goal of the season.

At the 12:14 mark Addi Halladay scored Queen's first power play goal to put her team ahead 2-0. Michele Knecht added a third goal for the Gaels in the final minute of the period, which chased Cassie Charette (Ottawa, Ont.) from the Ridgebacks goal to start the second period.

Shawna Griffin scored the first of her two power play goals 10:11 into the middle frame, with the second coming just 2:04 later.

UOIT got on the board with a power play goal of their own with 6:58 left in the period as Melissa Berney (Bowmanville, Ont.) scored her first of the season.

Chelsea Ball (Maple, Ont.) added a second goal for UOIT, also on the power play, with 1:33 to play in the third period. Charette allowed three goals on six shots for UOIT, while Tori Campbell (Lethbridge, Alta.) turned aside seven Queen's shots in relief.

Stephanie Pascal made 24 saves in the win for the Gaels.

UOIT has the weekend off as they prepare to host Waterloo and Laurier Feb. 7 and 8.
