OUA Men's Soccer: UOIT defeated RMC 2-1

OSHAWA, Ont. – Behind a strong second half effort, the UOIT men's soccer team earned their first win of the season as they defeated the RMC Paladins by a score of 2-1 at Vaso's Field on Saturday afternoon.

After falling behind 1-0 after 45 minutes, UOIT's performance on the field took a complete 180 turn as they started to put a ton of pressure on the Paladins defensive unit. The Ridgebacks would eventually score off a free kick, when the ball deflected off defender Davon Greaves (Brampton, Ont.) to the left foot of Tristan Maenza (Courtice, Ont.) who scored his first goal of the season.

In the 82nd minute, Erik Petrovic (Sombor, Serbia) was tripped up inside the box resulting in a penalty kick. Petrovic would get the honour of taking it and he would make no mistake, netting his second goal of the year and first game winner.

With one minute remaining before injury time, RMC had thought they had tied it up as they headed a ball past UOIT goalkeeper Travis Martin (Whitby, Ont.) off a free kick. However, UOIT defender Brendan Costello (Oshawa, Ont.) was undercut by an RMC attacker and a foul was called resulting in a free kick.

RMC goalkeeper Tobin Semple had an outstanding game as he made 10 saves, seven of which were in the second half. Martin made four saves in the Ridgebacks first win of the season.

UOIT sits in fifth place in the OUA eastern conference with a 1-1-2 record, tied with Nipissing (1-3-2) and two points ahead of the Paladins (1-3-0). The Ridgebacks will be put to the test on Sunday when they head to Kingston and take on the first place Queen's Gaels (4-0-1).
