OUA Men's Soccer Quarter-Final: Ryerson defeats UOIT 2-0 TORONTO – UOIT's Cinderella playoff run came to an end on Sunday afternoon as the nationally ranked Ryerson Rams shutout the Ridgebacks 2-0 in their OUA men's soccer quarter-final match in Toronto.
Both goals came in the first half of play, starting with Martin Dabrowski (Barrie, Ont.) in the 16th minute. Dabrowski capitalized on a poor UOIT clearance and he rifled a shot into the bottom right corner.
Ryerson had several other first half chances that didn't find the back of the net until extra time when Misel Klisara (Zenica, Bosnia) floated a corner kick into the box that found the head of Nick Lambis (Pickering, Ont.). His ball bounced down off the turf and Luka Lee (Toronto) got the final touch to push the ball over the line and give Ryerson a 2-0 lead heading into halftime.
Ryerson played shut down defence in the second half of the match, not allowing the Ridgebacks an attempt at goal despite their need to press for offence.
The loss puts an end to UOIT's season and their six-game winning streak.
2014 turned out to be a successful season for the Ridgebacks, as they shattered program records for points and wins in a season. The team qualified for the postseason for the first time in program history, while upsetting Carleton in penalty kicks for the first playoff victory.
With the majority of the team set to return in 2015, the UOIT coaching staff will look to build upon this season's success and continue to rise the ranks of the OUA.
Ryerson will be joined by York, McMaster and Toronto in the OUA final four in Hamilton.
