Ridgebacks drop a close one to Guelph

OUA Men's Hockey: Guelph defeats UOIT 4-1

OSHAWA, Ont. – The UOIT men's hockey team battled hard on Saturday night but failed to pick up their second win of the weekend as the Guelph Gryphons earned a 4-1 victory over the Ridgebacks.

With UOIT looking for the equalizer late in the third period, Guelph would score two late goals including an empty netter to clinch their third win of the season.

With the loss, UOIT drops to 3-3-1 this season and 2-2-0 on home-ice. Guelph has won three of their last four games and is 3-3-2 on the year.

UOIT was first to get on the board on Saturday, with Cameron Yuill (Wellington, Ont.) scoring a shorthanded goal with thirty seconds to go in the first period. Yuill, on a partial breakaway, made a nice move to beat Guelph's Andrew D'Agostini for UOIT's fourth shorthanded goal of the season, which leads the OUA.

Guelph would manage to rebound over the next twenty minutes as they scored two second period goals, outshooting UOIT 14-9 in the frame.

In the final stanza, the Ridgebacks applied plenty of pressure in the offensive zone, but could not find a way to beat the former Peterborough Pete goaltender a second time.

Making his first appearance of the season, UOIT goaltender Colin Dzijacky (Thunder Bay, Ont.) made 31 saves in the losing effort. Brendan O'Neill (Ilderton, Ont.), who had started the previous six games for UOIT, had the night off after getting banged around against Western one night earlier.

D'Agostini stopped 33 of 34 UOIT shots on goal.

UOIT will head to Quebec next weekend for games against Concordia on Friday, Oct. 31 and UQTR on Saturday, Nov. 1.
