OUA Men's Soccer: UOIT defeated Ryerson 3-0 TORONTO – The UOIT men's soccer team extended their winning streak to four-games on Wednesday night with a 3-0 shutout victory over the No. 5 ranked Ryerson Rams.
This marks only the Rams third regular season loss in 41 games, dating back to September 2, 2012. For UOIT, it is their first victory over a nationally ranked opponent in program history.
With the win, the Ridgebacks improve to 5-6-4 on the year and sit in fifth place in the OUA eastern conference standings with 19 points. UOIT will look to clinch their first playoff spot in program history this weekend as they sit four points ahead of Laurentian and five in front of Nipissing, who each have two games remaining in their respective regular seasons. UOIT will close out the year on the road against Carleton (Sun. Oct. 19).
Joe Vaz (Whitby, Ont.) opened up scoring for UOIT in the 23
rd minute when he finished off a great volley for his third goal of the season. Shortly after halftime, UOIT doubled up their lead when freshman forward
George Meditskos (Toronto, Ont.) deflected in a shot past Ryerson goalkeeper Christian Maraldo. After going scoreless in his first 11 career OUA games, Meditskos has heated up with two goals in his last three games.
With Ryerson desperate for a goal in the late stages of the game, it was UOIT who would end up finding the back of the net as
Alexander Cuccovillo (Ajax, Ont.) blocked a Ryerson clearance and hit the wide open goal, securing the Ridgebacks' fourth straight win.
Travis Martin (Whitby, Ont.) was spectacular in goal for UOIT as he made nine saves for his fourth shutout of the season. This was only the second time this year that Ryerson was held scoreless.
After watching the OUA out-of-town scoreboard on Saturday, UOIT will head up to Ottawa for their season finale on Sunday, October 19 against the Carleton Ravens (8-3-3). Game time against Carleton is 5:15 p.m.
