Ridgebacks cannot break a slump against Guelph

OUA Men's Soccer – Guelph defeated UOIT 5-0
Campus Cup – Thursday, September 5 vs. Durham College (7 p.m.)

OSHAWA, Ont. – Sometimes in sports, teams cannot find a way to have success against a particular opponent. That is definitely the case for UOIT against the University of Guelph in OUA men's soccer.

On Wednesday night at Vaso's Field, the Gryphons continued their dominance over UOIT as they shutout the Ridgebacks by a score of 5-0.

In four seasons in the OUA, the Ridgebacks have not fared well against Guelph as they have been outscored 37-8 while dropping seven straight decisions.

Robert Murphy, who scored four goals against UOIT last season, was once again the difference maker as he scored two first half goals to give Guelph a 2-0 lead after 45 minutes. The fifth year senior from Ottawa has scored 37 career goals for the Gryphons.

Guelph continued to press hard in the second half as Timothy Flynn scored an early goal to put Guelph ahead 3-0.

The Gryphons would add two more goals off a header from a corner kick and on a penalty shot to pick up the five-goal victory.

Travis Martin (Port Perry, Ont.) was in net for all five goals as he faced 16 shots on target. Niklas Wettering of Guelph stopped all four Ridgeback shots he faced.

Both teams entered the game with a tie in their season opener.

The Ridgebacks will be back in action on Thursday night as they play Durham College in the fifth annual Campus Cup. UOIT earned their first title last season with a 2-0 victory over the Lords. Game time is at 7 p.m. following the women's game.
