PETERBOROUGH, Ont. – The UOIT women's field lacrosse team earned their first victory in program history on Saturday afternoon as they defeated the McGill Redmen by a score of 8-6.
Despite a number of close games in the four year history of the field lacrosse program at UOIT, the Ridgebacks were never able to close out a game and pulled off a victory in OUA competition until today.
"It's hard to describe how amazing it felt to get our first win today," said communications major
Kristin Lemmon. "We have been working so hard in trying to make history and to have finally done so, the feeling is indescribable. It is a cliché to say but not one player won this game for us, it truly was a team effort and was something I feel very lucky to be a part of."
Amy Fincham and
Liane Chornobay have coached the program since day one, developing the team from scratch in 2010 and working hard to one day build a contender in the league.
"This win wouldn't have been possible without the hard work and determination from our two coaches who have been by our side through every hardship," continued Lemmon. "All I know is that we will not forget this feeling and will be hungry for it for the remainder of the season."
Tessa Lam, who has been with the team since 2011, was in net for UOIT in the win. She managed to make a number of keys saves against the Redmen.
Taylor Milburn recorded a hat-trick in the victory, which included the game-winner. Other goal scorers included
Brittany Simmons,
Kristen Bright,
Samantha Hagan,
Kathryn Goodwin and
Jill Carroll.
Earlier in the day, the Ridgebacks dropped a 10-6 decision to the Toronto Varsity Blues. Bright had two goals in the loss, with singles going to Milburn,
Tiffany Allen, Carroll and Goodwin.
The Ridgebacks will host five games next Saturday at Civic Fields in Oshawa. UOIT will take part in two of the games as they take on Trent at 9:45 a.m. and Laurier at 3 p.m. Other teams taking part in Saturday's action include Queen's and McGill.
