Dramatic win for UOIT over Laurier

OUA Women's Soccer: UOIT defeated Laurier 2-1

WATERLOO, Ont. – The UOIT women's soccer team spoiled the beginning of homecoming weekend for the Laurier Golden Hawks as they escaped Waterloo with a 2-1 victory on Friday night.

Sonia Sampogna (Toronto, Ont.) was the hero for UOIT as she scored in the fourth minute of injury time to give the Ridgebacks a 2-1 lead. This marked Sampogna's first game-winning goal of the season.

All three goals were scored in the second half of play. Emily Copeland-Dinan (Ottawa, Ont.) opened up scoring for UOIT three minutes into the half but Laurier would strike back at the 73-minute mark with Julie Maheu scoring for the Golden Hawks. Both goals were the players first of the season. With it looking like each team would walk away with a point, Sampogna would strike to give the Ridgebacks their third conference victory of the year.

Laura Whelan (St. John's, N.L.) stopped five of six Laurier shots on target for the win while Katrina Ward made three saves over the course of the night for Laurier.

UOIT's defence did a great job of shutting down 2012 CIS All-Canadian Emily Brown, as she was limited to just two shots on target in the loss. Brown scored the game-winning goal against UOIT one week prior.

The Ridgebacks (3-4-2) are currently tied for the final two playoff positions with York (2-2-5) and Windsor (3-3-2). The team will be put to the test on Sunday afternoon when they host the undefeated Western Mustangs at 1 p.m. Western is 4-0-4 this season and beat UOIT 3-0 in London.
