Ridgebacks cannot tame Murphy and the Gryphons
OUA Men's Soccer: Guelph defeated UOIT 5-1
GUELPH, Ont. – Sunday's result against the No. 6 ranked Guelph Gryphons was little bit of déjà vu for the UOIT men's soccer team as they lost by a score of 5-1.
Guelph has dominated UOIT in four seasons of play, as they have outscored the Ridgebacks 42-9 in eight straight wins. In their previous match this season, Guelph left Oshawa with a 5-0 victory.
The Ridgebacks could not find a way to stop Guelph striker Robert Murphy who scored a hat-trick in the Gryphons fifth win of the year. Murphy scored two goals against UOIT earlier in the year and had a four goal performance one year ago.
Justin Springer and Timothy Flynn were the other goal scorers for Guelph.
Despite the loss, the Ridgebacks got off to a good start when Alex Cuccovillo (Ajax, Ont.) scored his first career goal off a free kick at the 18-minute mark. The wheels would fall off for UOIT shortly after as Guelph scored five unanswered goals in the win.
Travis Martin (Port Perry, Ont.) was busy in net as he faced 22 shots on target, nine of which were by Murphy.
Guelph improved to 5-1-2 on the year while UOIT falls to 1-6-1.
UOIT will head to Waterloo next Friday night for a match against the Laurier Golden Hawks. The two teams met on Saturday afternoon with Laurier walking away from homecoming with a 2-0 victory.
