Freshman goalkeepers shine on opening day
OUA Women's Soccer: UOIT tied Brock 0-0
OSHAWA, Ont. – First year UOIT women's soccer goalkeeper Melissa MacKinnon (Millgrove, Ont.) recorded a shutout in her OUA regular season debut as the Ridgebacks tied Brock 0-0 on Saturday afternoon.
MacKinnon stopped all five Brock shots on target, including a breakaway during the 38th minute of the first half.
Unfortunately for the Ridgebacks, MacKinnon's masterful performance wasn't enough to earn three points as Brock had a standout freshman goalkeeper of their own. Alexa Jackman made eight total stops for the cleansheet in her first game.
UOIT had several scoring chances throughout the game including two breakaways that came up short. UOIT midfielder
Sara Voisin (Waterloo, Ont.) had a strike from distance midway through the second half, but Jackman just managed to get a piece of the ball to keep the Ridgebacks off the board.
Both teams earned a point in their opening game of the regular season, joining McMaster and Laurier at 0-0-1 in the OUA western conference.
UOIT remains unbeaten all-time against Brock sporting a 2-0-1 record.
The Ridgebacks next action is scheduled for Wednesday, September 4 against the University of Guelph (0-0-0). The Gryphons open up their regular season at home against McMaster (0-0-1) on Monday.
