Ridgebacks bounce Brock in women's soccer

OUA Women's Soccer: UOIT defeated Brock 2-1

ST. CATHARINES, Ont. – The UOIT women's soccer team scored two second half goals in a big 2-1 road victory over the Brock Badgers.

With the win, UOIT moves into a three-way tie for fifth place in the OUA western conference with Windsor and York. All three teams have 14 points in 11 games played.

Brock got on the board in the first half when Kara Ross (St. Catharines, Ont.) deflected the ball off a free kick past UOIT goalkeeper Melissa MacKinnon (Millgrove, Ont.).

After dominating the opening minutes of the second half, UOIT would eventually level the score when Kayla De Souza (Scarborough, Ont.) broke in past the Badger defence to score her second goal of the year.

In the 65th minute, Nicole Zajac (Mississauga, Ont.) was issued a red card as the Ridgebacks went down a man. Despite playing shorthanded, UOIT continued to press if the offensive end

In the 78th minute, Brock would commit a hand ball in the box which would result in a Ridgeback penalty kick. Captain Shannon Lucas (Ajax, Ont.) would make no mistake as she scored her third career goal giving UOIT their first lead of the game and eventually the win

MacKinnon stopped three of four Badger shots on goal while Brock goalkeeper Jenna Vasiliaskas made seven total saves.


The Ridgebacks will look to complete the weekend sweep on Sunday when they head to Hamilton to take on McMaster. The Marauders sit three points ahead of UOIT for fourth place in the conference standings. Game time in Hamilton is 1 p.m.

NOTES: The Ridgebacks last six games have ended with a score of 2-1.
