UOIT's women's soccer playoff run ends in Waterloo
OUA Women's Soccer Quarter-Finals
Laurier defeated UOIT 2-0
WATERLOO, Ont. – The UOIT women's soccer team's season came to an end on Sunday afternoon as the Laurier Golden Hawks earned a 2-0 win over the Ridgebacks in their OUA quarter-final match-up.
The Ridgebacks made school history as they became the first varsity team to qualify for the OUA quarter-finals in just the second year of the program.
2012 CIS All-Canadian Emily Brown got the Golden Hawks on the board early as she scored in the third minute of the game, striking from 30-yards out. Brown led the OUA in scoring for the second straight year with 18 goals in 15 games played during the regular season.
In the 60th minute, UOIT forward
Sonia Sampogna (Toronto) had a good chance to level the score but Laurier goalkeeper Katrina Ward came up with a big save to preserve the lead.
The game remained 1-0 until the 77th minute when second year defender Cassandra Mensah scored her first career goal, giving the Hawks some insurance.
UOIT would fire seven shots on target but could not find a way beat Ward, as she picked the shutout.
After suffering a broken rib earlier in the season, Ridgeback freshman
Kayla De Souza (Scarborough, Ont.) had a gutty performance as she made her return to the line-up and recorded a shot on goal.
UOIT goalkeeper Melissa MacKinnon (Millgrove, Ont.), who recorded a shutout in the opening round of the playoffs, stopped three shots on target in the loss.
With the win, Laurier will make their seventh consecutive appearance at the OUA Final Four championship. UOIT finishes the year with a 10-7-6 overall record in just their second season in the OUA. Last year, the Ridgebacks reached the round of 16 with an 8-10-3 overall record.
After a season where the team had UOIT's best finish in a team sport, the players and coaching staff will work hard during in the offseason and prepare for year three in 2014.
