UOIT women's soccer clinches a playoff berth with their fourth straight win

OUA Women's Soccer: UOIT defeated Waterloo 1-0

WATERLOO, Ont. – The UOIT women's soccer team will be returning to the OUA playoffs for the second straight season as they earned a 1-0 victory over the Waterloo Warriors on Sunday afternoon.

UOIT is currently one of the hottest teams in the OUA as they have won four straight matches and six of their last seven. The Ridgebacks are in a tie for third place in the OUA western conference with the Guelph Gryphons, with both teams sporting matching 7-5-2 records. They trail the Laurier Golden Hawks (7-3-3) by one point for second place with one week remaining in the regular season.

Although the Ridgebacks did not have their best performance of the year on Sunday, they did just enough to pick up the 1-0 win over Waterloo and three big points in the standings.

UOIT's Sonia Sampogna (Toronto, Ont.) scored the game's lone goal in the 19th minute, as she had a good touch on the ball off a corner kick from Sara Voisin (Waterloo, Ont.).

Sampogna scored three goals in UOIT's pair of wins this weekend, which also included a 3-1 victory over McMaster on Friday night. She now has five goals this season, which is a career high for the Health Science major.

UOIT outshot Waterloo 8-2 in the win, as they controlled the majority of possession throughout the game. Waterloo did create some scoring opportunities in the second half, but goalkeeper Melissa MacKinnon (Millgrove, Ont.) came up with a couple of big saves to preserve the cleansheet.

The Ridgebacks will match-up against York (Wednesday) and Windsor (Sunday) at home to close out the final week of the regular season.
