KINGSTON, Ont. – A pair of opening day victories on Saturday for the Ontario Tech University women's lacrosse team became a program first for the Ridgebacks.
Against the Guelph Gryphons to start the day, Ontario Tech opened with a 16-6 win, which they followed with a 12-9 come-from-behind victory over the Brock Badgers.
"We couldn't have asked for a better opening weekend for our team," said head coach
Liane Chornobay. "Two big wins - including coming from behind in the fourth quarter of our second game. There is a lot of work ahead and we are so excited to see what the season has in store for us."
Nicole Martindale (Brooklin, Ont.) scored a team-high seven goals in the opening game, followed by
Ayden Briggs (Oshawa, Ont.) scoring four. Also scoring for the Ridgebacks were
Samantha Gates (2) (Uxbridge, Ont.),
Hannah Bragg (Oshawa, Ont.),
Dale Wilson (Saskatoon, Sask.) and
Caitlyn Cote (Oshawa, Ont.)
Gates also picked up two assists, while Cote and
Brianna Nicolas (Ajax, Ont.) each had one apiece.
The second game was much of the same as Martindale had a team-high seven goals. Gates and Cote each tallied twice, while Briggs scored once. Bragg had the lone assist against the Badgers. In goal for both wins was
Lauren Young (Fergus, Ont.).
Unlike the first game though, the Ridgebacks trailed 7-4 at the half. After adjustments they held the Badgers to only two goals, while scoring eight of their own.
Next weekend the OUA championship host Ridgebacks return to Vaso's Field for a pair of games. They face the York Lions at 8:30 a.m., followed by the Queen's Gaels at 1:45 p.m.
Overall Record: 2-0
Next Game: Saturday, Sept. 14 vs. York Lions (8:30 a.m. – Vaso's Field)
