OSHAWA, Ont. – The UOIT women's hockey team failed to put an end to Queen's win streak but did pick up a point as the Gaels earned a 2-1 victory at the Campus Ice Centre Friday night.
It was Bell Let's Talk night at the Campus Ice Centre as student-athletes across the country are speaking up to end the stigma around mental illness.
With the overtime victory, Queen's has won seven straight games and jumps into third place with an 11-6-0 record. UOIT (7-6-4) slips into a three-way tie for eighth place with the Brock Badgers (8-6-1) and Laurentian Voyageurs (7-8-1), as they battle it out for the last playoff position down the stretch.
Kassidy Nauboris (Brampton, Ont.) scored the Ridgebacks lone goal that came at 16:54 of the first period, with
Chelsea Ball (Maple, Ont.) and
Teresa Horner (Hamilton, Ont.) earning assists. Nauboris put a backhand through Stephanie Pascal's five-hole for her 13th goal of the season which puts her second in OUA goal scoring.
Queen's would tie up the game 44 seconds into the third period when Kyla Crouse beat a screened
Cassie Charette (Ottawa, Ont.) from the slot.
In overtime, the Ridgebacks were victims of bad luck as Nadia Larocca put the puck in front of the net and it would ricochet off a Ridgeback defender's skate and in the back of the net just 12 seconds in.
UOIT would outshoot Queen's 31-23. Charette ended up with 21 saves as she has allowed two goals in her last three appearances. Pascal had 30 saves in her tenth win of the year.
The Ridgebacks power play did not see any action as Queen's was penalty free. The Gaels power play unit failed to score on three attempts.
Things will not get any easier for UOIT as they take on the No. 4 ranked Guelph Gryphons on Saturday. Game time is 2 p.m. in Guelph.
