UOIT's season comes to an end in Trois-Rivières
OUA Men's Hockey Quarter-Finals
Game Two: UQTR defeated UOIT 5-3
TROIS-RIVIÈRES, Que. – The UOIT men's hockey team had their season come to an end on Saturday afternoon as they dropped a 5-3 decision to UQTR in game two of their OUA quarter-final series. With the win, UQTR sweeps the Ridgebacks to move on to the second round of the playoffs.
Following an 8-3 lopsided loss in their opening game, the Ridgebacks had a much stronger performance in game two against the defending OUA champions but it was still not enough to lift the team to victory and force a game three.
Power play goals were once again UOIT's Achilles heel as they allowed back-to-back strikes in the second and third period to give the Patriotes a 5-2 lead. UQTR scored four times with the man-advantage in game one, giving them six in the series sweep. UQTR was even able to capitalize when they had a man in the box as their opening goal of the game came shorthanded midway through the first period.
For UOIT, three players registered their first career playoff goals as
Cameron Yuill (Wellington, Ont.),
Dominik Crnogorac (Mississauga, Ont.) and
Jason Shaw (Belleville, Ont.) all found the scoresheet. Yuill, who scored UOIT's first goal of the game, ended the night with two points.
UOIT forward
James Woodcroft (Milton, Ont.) would add two assists in the losing effort as he continued his strong playoff play finishing up with four points in two games.
For the second consecutive game, UOIT goaltender
Colin Dzijacky (Thunder Bay, Ont.) was pulled midway through the game after the freshman netminder allowed five goals on 51 shots, while back-up goaltender
Jacob Rattie (Niagara Falls, Ont.) stopped all six shots he faced in the final ten minutes of the game. UQTR's Marc-Antoine Gelinas made 24 saves in his second win of the series.
Saturday's game marked the final outing for Rattie along with fellow graduating senior and UOIT captain
Luke VanMoerkerke (Tillsonburg, Ont.).
UOIT finishes off the year with an 8-24-4 record while qualifying for postseason play for the second consecutive year.
Newly appointed head coach
Craig Fisher will now take over the program and look to improve the team's performance in 2014-15.
