UOIT athletic department recognizes program-high 47 academic award winners

OSHAWA, Ont. – The University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) athletic department recognized a program-high 47 students at the academic luncheon on Tuesday afternoon.

"We're extremely proud of what our student-athletes have accomplished not only in their respective sports this year, but also in the classroom and today is an opportunity to put the spotlight on the achievements each of these student-athletes has attained in the classroom," said Scott Barker, manager of intercollegiate athletics. "The number of athletes receiving an all-academic award today is a testament to our student athletes wanting to be leaders in the province not only athletically, but academically as well."

The 47 student-athletes were recognized for their success in the classroom through the all-academic awards, top GPA by sport and top overall GPA awards.

Criminology and Justice major Cindy Nguyen, of the women's badminton team, was presented with the UOIT Scholastic Award. This award recognizes the student with the top overall GPA of all female varsity student-athletes.

Nuclear Engineering major Seamus Pinfield, of the men's curling team, received the highest GPA amongst male student-athletes.

The pair were also presented with the Bob Baun Scholarship, which was first awarded in 2014-15.

For the second time, the top GPA awards were also announced. Golf won the men's team award for the second straight year with a 3.08 GPA. Women's curling won the female award, which was won by dance in the inaugural year, with a 3.44 GPA.

This Thursday the 11th annual athletic banquet will take place at the Regent Theatre in Oshawa.
